Technical Guide – Understanding Stainless Steel Surface Finishes (2B, BA, Hairline, Mirror)
2026/04/28
Meta Description: Confused about 2B, BA, Hairline, and Mirror Polished finishes? Learn the technical differences, applications, and benefits of Brushed & Mirror Stainless Steel Sheets for construction and industry.
When sourcing stainless steel sheets, the surface finish is just as critical as the grade (304, 316, 430). A poorly chosen finish can lead to corrosion, high maintenance, or a disappointing aesthetic. In the world of stainless steel, terms like Brushed, Mirror Polished, Hairline, 2B, and BA define not only the look but also the performance.
At our Wuxi-based facility (established 2012), we process both hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils into high-precision sheets. This guide explains each finish to help you make an informed decision.
-
2B Finish (Cold Rolled): This is the most common bright, cold-rolled finish. It is moderately reflective (like a cloudy mirror) but not highly lustrous. 2B is the standard for industrial applications, kitchen equipment, and medical trays because it offers a smooth, easy-to-clean surface without the cost of high polishing.
-
BA (Bright Annealed): After cold rolling, the steel is annealed under a protective atmosphere, resulting in a highly reflective, mirror-like surface. BA is smoother than 2B and serves as the base material for further polishing (Hairline or Mirror).
-
Hairline (Brushed): Also known as "Brushed Finish," this involves unidirectional polishing that produces long, continuous lines like silk or satin. It hides fingerprints and minor scratches effectively, making it ideal for elevator door panels, escalator decorative panels, and kitchen backsplashes.
-
Mirror Polished (No. 8): This is a highly reflective, mirror-like surface. When combined with PVD coating (Titanium mirror), it creates stunning gold, rose gold, or black reflective sheets used for luxury building facades, ceilings, and column cladding.
-
Titanium Mirror Stainless Steel: We take a mirror-finished sheet and apply PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating. This adds a durable, colorful layer (gold, bronze, black, etc.) without fading. The underlying brushed or mirror texture remains visible, adding depth.
-
Cold Rolled: Better surface finish, tighter tolerances, ideal for decorative and precision parts (0.1-3mm thick).
-
Hot Rolled: Lower cost, thicker plates (3-100mm), used for structural components that will later be ground or polished.
Choosing the right finish depends on your application: go with 2B or BA for industrial/medical use, Hairline for high-traffic decorative areas, and Mirror/Titanium for luxury architectural statements. As a leading supplier with 12,000 tons annual output, we provide all these finishes in both hot and cold rolled forms.
