Korean Shipbuilding Company Uses 316Ti Plate for Seawater Ballast Tanks
Project: Ballast tank internal reinforcements and weld pads
Location: Busan, South Korea
Product: ASTM 316Ti Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Sheet, 10mm thick, 1500mm x 6000mm
A major South Korean shipbuilder needed corrosion-resistant material for seawater ballast tanks on an LNG carrier. Standard carbon steel with coatings failed due to coating damage during welding. They required a stainless steel solution that could withstand stagnant seawater and periodic oxygen exposure.
Our company supplied ASTM 316Ti hot rolled stainless steel sheet in 10mm thickness. The titanium stabilization prevents intergranular corrosion after welding — a critical requirement for shipyard fabrication. We provided customized 6000mm length plates to minimize on-site welding. All material passed third-party inspection by DNV classification society.
Result: The ballast tank reinforcements showed zero rust after 14 months in active service. The shipbuilder reduced welding time by 35% thanks to our custom lengths. They have since approved our 316Ti plates as a standard reference for all seawater-exposed applications across their shipyards.
