Chilean Mining Company Uses 316Ti for High-Abrasion Slurry Pipes

Project: Copper slurry pipe flange plates and wear pads
Location: Antofagasta, Chile
Product: ASTM 316Ti Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Sheet, 10mm thickness, wear-resistant surface

A Chilean mining operation faced severe erosion-corrosion on carbon steel flange connections handling copper slurry with high chloride content. Parts failed every 3 months, causing production losses. They needed a material that resists both abrasion and chemical attack.

We supplied ASTM 316Ti hot rolled stainless steel sheet at 10mm thick. The molybdenum content (2.0-3.0%) provides chloride resistance, while titanium stabilization maintains integrity in welded connections. We added a custom sand-blasted surface finish to improve slurry grip and reduce erosion velocity effects.

Result: The 316Ti flange plates lasted 14 months — nearly 5 times longer than previous materials. The mining company reduced unplanned downtime by 80% on that slurry line. They have standardized 316Ti plates for all wet abrasion applications across three processing plants.
